Why King David Mowbray Means So Much to SADGA

Few members have a connection to King David Mowbray Golf Club quite like Daphne Sole. Having joined the Club as a Prentice member in 1978, KDM has been at the heart of her golfing journey for nearly five decades.
Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, Daphne grew up on the fairways of Royal Durban Golf Club before earning a full golf scholarship to Longwood University in Virginia, USA. She returned to South Africa in the early 1990s to pursue a professional golfing career before later serving the Club as Course Marshal and Golf Development Manager.
Today, Daphne is best known for her passion for junior golf development. Inspired by the opportunities golf gave her as a youngster, she has dedicated herself to helping children grow both on and off the course. Since 2012, many of her students have gone on to become single-figure golfers and represent Western Province, but for Daphne, the greatest reward is seeing them develop into respectful, humble and confident young people.
Ask Daphne what King David Mowbray means to her and her answer is simple: “KDMGC is my world.” She dreams of seeing even more opportunities for junior golfers and believes the Club’s welcoming, family-focused atmosphere and rich history make it the perfect place to grow the game.
One of the proudest moments of her career came in 2022 when President Cyril Ramaphosa invited her and one of her students to participate in the President’s Golf Day following the State of the Nation Address. Watching her student receive the First Ladies’ Prize made the occasion even more memorable.
If there’s one piece of advice Daphne hopes every golfer takes to heart, it’s this: “Kill it with kindness.” Whether on the golf course or in everyday life, she believes in treating others—and yourself—with patience, respect and kindness.
We’re proud to celebrate Daphne’s remarkable contribution to King David Mowbray Golf Club and thank her for the passion, dedication and inspiration she continues to share with our members and future generations of golfers.
