King David Mowbray Golf Club | Urban Golf Course in Cape Town

It has been another busy and exciting month for golf at King David Mowbray Golf Club, with plenty happening both on and off the course. From Western Province Golf Union news and outstanding individual performances to league success and club competitions, there is much to celebrate.

Western Province Golf Union AGM

I recently attended the Western Province Golf Union Annual General Meeting, where proceedings ran smoothly. Maureen Weimar was re-elected unopposed as Union President, while Richard Nell and Florence Harding were elected as the Men’s and Women’s Vice-Presidents respectively.

Congratulations are also extended to Hennie Walters and Werner Thiart of Bellville Golf Club, who were elected as new committee members.

KDM Players Flying the Flag

King David Mowbray was proudly represented by two teams of four players at the Annual Winter League held at Strand Golf Club.

Special congratulations go to two of our players who finished under par for the day:

  • Daniel Davidson – 71 & 71 (-2)
  • Gabriel Firer – 75 & 68 (-1)

KDM 1 finished in 10th place, while KDM 2 secured 15th place.

Congratulations are also due to Craig Poulton, who claimed victory in the Super Seniors division at the Kuils River Seniors event with an excellent even-par 72.

We are equally proud of Zoey Rhoda, who has been selected for the International Team competing in the Run Africa Dames Tournament in Reunion Island. We wish Zoey every success in the tournament.

Matchplay Championship Delivers Outstanding Golf

This year’s Club Matchplay Championship Final provided spectators with a memorable contest.

Captain Shane Ricketts and I had the privilege of accompanying Anthony Hobson and Daniel Davidson, both former Matchplay Champions, as they produced a superb final featuring no fewer than nine birdies.

After trailing by two holes with just three to play, Anthony staged a remarkable comeback before securing victory with a birdie on the first extra hole to become our 2026 KDM Matchplay Champion. Congratulations, Anthony!

Thank You to Our Monthly Medal Sponsor

A sincere thank you goes to Stephen Victor for his generous sponsorship of our June Monthly Medal.

Stephen’s support included self-built clubs together with cash prizes for the various section winners, making for a fantastic day of competition.

Meat Day Singles Stableford

Congratulations to Peter de Villiers, who produced an excellent 41 Stableford points to win the Rondebosch East Toyota Singles Day.

Well played, Peter!

League Update

Our Harry Solomon League team continues to perform strongly.

Following a bye at the end of May, the team halved their fixture against Rondebosch before recording a narrow 5–3 victory over Strand. They followed this with an impressive 5½–2½ win against Atlantic Beach, securing qualification for the semi-finals with one match still to play.

With the Premier, First League, Third League and Super Seniors leagues commencing in August, now is the time for members hoping to represent KDM to ensure their games are in top form.

Hole-in-One Honours

Congratulations to two members who achieved every golfer’s dream this month.

Gary Berkal recorded another hole-in-one on the 16th hole with a beautifully struck 8-iron that never left the flag. Remarkably, this is Gary’s second hole-in-one in two months!

Congratulations also go to Dr Jack Derman, who continues his fine form with a hole-in-one on the 8th hole using a 6-iron.

Remembering Martin Jack

Finally, it is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our long-time KD and KDM caddie, Martin Jack, following a lengthy illness.

Martin was a familiar and respected member of the club community for

many years, and our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family

and loved ones during this difficult time.
