Meet the Member: O’Brian “OB” Barber – A Lifetime Connected to KDM

King David Mowbray Golf Club | Urban Golf Course in Cape Town

For many members, O’Brian “OB” Barber is a familiar face around King David Mowbray Golf Club. Whether through his time as General Manager of the club, his leadership within the South African golf industry, or his current role as Managing Executive of PlayMoreGolf, OB has dedicated much of his life to growing the game and supporting golf clubs across the country.

His journey has taken him from founding O’Brian Barber Promotions and launching successful golf-related businesses to serving Western Province Golf, captaining provincial teams and helping shape some of South Africa’s leading golf clubs. Yet despite an accomplished career, it is KDM that continues to hold a special place in his heart. Simply asked what the club means to him today, his response says it all: “Home. My Past. Pride and Joy.”

Reflecting on his time as General Manager of Mowbray Golf Club, OB speaks most fondly of the members, their stories and the club’s remarkable heritage. He also recalls the privilege of working alongside a dedicated team of staff and representing Mowbray in both the Stephen League and Premier League. Among his favourite golfing memories at the club are playing the iconic 7th hole during the 1978 South African Open and shooting an impressive 63 on a course then playing to a par of 74.

Throughout his career, OB has remained guided by a simple philosophy: treat people with compassion and respect. He believes trust is earned, opportunities should never be taken for granted and that life is far too short not to appreciate every moment. His advice is refreshingly straightforward: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”

When asked what makes King David Mowbray Golf Club truly special, OB doesn’t point to one single feature. Instead, he highlights the combination of its loyal members, championship course, rich heritage, exceptional location and, above all, its unique spirit and sense of community.

Golf has also introduced OB to many lifelong mentors and friends, including James Stirton, Peter Todd and the late John Pickering, each of whom helped shape both his golfing career and outlook on life.

Beyond KDM, few places have left a greater impression on him than St Andrews, where he had the opportunity to play and walk the historic fairways that gave birth to the game of golf. And if he could choose one final fourball, it would include golfing legends Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus — adding with a smile that he’d happily spend the round simply listening to their stories.

Today, as an Honorary Member of King David Mowbray Golf Club, OB continues to be a passionate ambassador for both the club and the game. His connection to KDM spans decades, and his commitment to preserving its traditions while embracing its future serves as a reminder of what makes this club such a special place.

We’re proud to have OB as part of the KDM family and thank him for his ongoing support of the club and its members.
