Over the past six weeks, the Western Cape has experienced some of the most severe winter weather in recent memory.
Successive cold fronts and cut-off low pressure systems brought torrential rain, damaging winds, rough seas and widespread flooding across many parts of the province. In some areas of the Garden Route, rainfall totals exceeded 150–200 mm, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 70–80 km/h. The impact on communities, infrastructure and agriculture has been significant.
Many golf courses around the province suffered extensive flooding, erosion, damage to bunkers and pathways, and prolonged closures. Recovery for some facilities will take many months. Fortunately, we have come through this challenging period relatively unscathed. While we did lose a few big trees and there has naturally been some storm clean-up and minor repairs required, we escaped the serious damage experienced elsewhere. Perhaps a little help from Lady Luck.
We are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our members while weather interruptions affected play. It is easy to take good conditions for granted, and these past few weeks have reminded us how fortunate we are to enjoy a course that is able to hold up and bounce back from adversity so quickly.
A Welcome Addition to the Fleet
This week also brought some exciting news with the arrival of our new Toro Groundsmaster® 3575-D fairway mower. This machine represents a significant investment in the future of the golf course and will help us continue to provide the quality playing surfaces our members expect. Its excellent contour-following ability, consistency and efficiency will enhance fairway presentation while improving productivity for the maintenance team.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Club and our members for their continued support. Investments such as these enable us to maintain and improve the course despite the many challenges that nature presents. As we move deeper into winter, we remain committed to presenting the best possible conditions and look forward to many enjoyable rounds ahead.
